The art of storytelling is preserved in Ireland by the Arts Council of Ireland.The aim of the Arts Council of Ireland is ‘to promote the practice, study and knowledge of oral storytelling in Ireland through the preservation and perpetation of traditional contemporary (The Arts Council,2011). The art of the storytelling was originally designed to bring people together. This is exactly what the sceanachi did folklore. Folklore is defined by Galway County Council and Galway Heritage Forum (2004-08) as being “much like terms such as Heritage and culture can be difficult to define. Like our heritage and culture it is all around us. It is often subconsiously absorbed by us from the cradle. In its most rudemntry form it relates to traditional tales and stories of faries, leprechauns and banshees and old folk beliefs in supernatural creatures and things that never were. Storytelling is linked into Irish
According to Hamiliton (anon) Storytelling in Ireland is a phonemonom which has been around for centuries. Storytelling can be seen as being part of Ireland’s social history. According to Joyce (1906) Storytelling has formed part of the following sectors in Ireland .These sectors included‘ For thousands of years the storytellers were able to convince their believers of many different things (Hamilton, unknown).
Storytellers have played an important role in Irish society from the days when they told stories to kings and noblesmen. (Irish Family History,2010)
